Well, words aren't going to describe this new event as well as a few photos of the frolicking Branch members and wives. The weather threatened early, but staunch hearts prevailed, and the evening cruise turned out to be sunny and beautiful. After a great island tour and fantastically funny entertainment, we returned to the Fort Henry area for the fireworks (both on the Fort Henry summit, and on the dance floor!) Docking at 2130 hrs, we all agreed it was a fabulous way to dine with friends on the river. Brenda Truelove stood in for Cmdr Truelove, and we also welcomed new members:

  • 6826 Don Hargest and his wife Linda

  • 15595 Billy Allan and his wife Katherine

  • 19798 Sean Carscadden, and Eleni

  • 23988 Gino Bruni and girlfriend Monique (RMC Masters)

The Executive thanks special event manager Charlene Fawcett for a great new event!

Branch July Luncheon

16656 LCol S.N. (Scott) Clancy, COS 1 Wing HQ kept the luncheon audience speechless as he described air operations not only in in Haiti, but some key aspects of the deployment of the Griffon helicopter in Afghanistan. At the completion of his speech, the applause died down but many members stayed for more, as Scott continued to elaborate on our men and machines. At points, there was scarcely a dry eye in the house as he described the plight of the poor on Haiti, what our operations meant to them, and the skill and courage of our forces. Conditions on the ground were deplorable, but our heavy lifters and rotary wing fleet kept up a brutal pace to get relief supplies where they were needed. Scott's obvious passion for his work, his men and the assignments was a great object lesson to a number of young officers present. Accolades continue to come in about the presentation, BZ, Scott!

1271 Douglas W. Frederick

The RMC Museum was fortunate to receive a large collection of souvenirs, memorabilia and personal items which once belonged to 1271 Douglas W. Frederick who attended RMC  from August 1916 to November, 1917, was commissioned as a 2nd Lt., Royal Garrison Artillery  and served in England, France, Belgium and Italy as a communications officer with a heavy siege battery. Frederick survived the war, finished his education at McGill and worked in the financial sector in Canada and the USA and as active in the ex-cadet club, including a spell as President of the Hamilton Chapter. He died in 1975.

The collection was researched, catalogued and photographed and soon will be available on a national database to researchers interested in the period. Minimal restoration has been done to date. This work has been done principally by Branch members 8057 Ross McKenzie and 4976 Reg Watts. In the collection were 164 item groups. Some, such as the letter and postcard categories, contain hundreds of individual pieces.

 The main groupings are:

  • RMC memorabilia.

  • Letters to his parents and 4 small personal war diaries.

  • Letters and postcards between Douglas and his infantryman brother.

  • Service kit and sidearm.

  • Trench maps, bombardment plans, and aerial bombardment recon photos.

  • German army souvenirs.

  • Post-war civilian items, including RMC club items.

A fortunate find, and among the items, several pieces of RMC kit and memorabilia of which only photographs existed previously.  This week, a slideshow of Frederick’s RMC memorabilia is presented on the RMC History tab here, and a series of Frederick collection item slideshows will be posted on the Kingston Branch website in future weeks.

Change of Command

It was a hot sunny Friday morning, July 17 for the change in command ceremony between

Brigadier-General T.J. Lawson, OMM, CD and  Commodore W.S. Truelove, OMM, CD. Nearly 200 RMC cadets were on parade as was the band of the Canadian Sea Cadets. The Presiding Officer was Major-General J.P.Y.P Gosselin, CMM, CD.

BG Lawson spoke about his extreme delight in commanding RMC, and explained to cadets and guests that RMC was fortunate to have the three fundamental elements of an excellent military college; a high standard of enthusiastic cadets, a dedicated civilian and military staff, and a committed command structure to support and promote the College's interests. MG Gosselin thanked the outgoing Commandant for the College's advancement under his command and welcomed Commodore Truelove, who in turn addressed the assembly and declared his delight at the appointment.

An Air Force "fast mover" saluted the parade with a low pass at the culmination of the Cadet body's advance in review order, and the guests welcomed  Commodore Truelove at a reception in the SSM following the departure of BG Lawson.

July Branch Luncheon

Dr John Cowan was the guest speaker, and he attracted an unusually large number of members to hear about the early days of the RMC Club. As usual, John's presentation was interesting, amusing and filled with interesting facts and anecdotes, most of them new to us.

John spoke about the early days of the Club, which was formed by two ex-cadets of the Old 18, of threats to the continuation of the Colleges and the Club's responses. He pointed out that some of the most stalwart RMC Club supporters and accomplished warriors were not always those that had done well at RMC. Questions followed, many of which centered around the political decision-making related to the closure of the two 'feeder" colleges, and John pointed out that RMC is in a strong position today because those closures resulted in RMC becoming truly bilingual.

Branch Spring Formal Dinner

This year we had our largest Spring Formal turnout ever, and everyone enjoyed the candlelight ambience and the background music of Ross MacLachlan. Our dinner guests were S162 Jack Chiang, columnist, photographer, and now Justice of the Peace. Our speakers were E0733 LCol Tony O'Keeffe, DCadets, who described the heroic efforts of the RMC Sandhurst Military Skills Competition Team, Captain Nathan Price, coach of the Sandhurst Team, and the team leader O/C Jean LeBoutillier who described the reason that RMC has prevailed 4 time in the last 5 years in this competition against 46 military academies from around the world. The audience was spellbound and quickly rose with a standing ovation.

The following "toast to the ladies," in Iambic Pentameter to mimic Shakespeare's sonnets, was written and presented by Charlie Simonds at the Branch Spring Formal. Critics are invited to submit their appreciations of Charlies work using the form in the "Contact" tab of the site.

In Praise of Ladies Living

Gracious lady’ is the term in common use;

An apt expression of their state, for first

They grace us with their bodies, giving birth,

Then nurse and nurture us throughout our youth.

They grace our homes with culinary skill,

With washing, mending, cleaning, serving all

The family, who expect with beck and call

The lady of the house to do their will.

They grace the office with proficiency

And at days end they often grace our bed

About which any more is best unsaid.

Yes, gracious, then, is truly what they be.

So raise with me a glass in praise of wives

And lady friends who kindly grace our lives.
